Today Muslims all over the world celebrate Aidil Fitri or Hari Raya Puasa as it is commonly called in Malaysia. Aidil Fitri marks the end of the month of Ramadhan. Fasting for the fit and able is a compulsory requirement for the Muslim.
In Malaysia, Hari Raya Puasa is a much anticipated celebration. People working in the cities or away from home will make every effort to return to their hometown to celebrate the occasion with their family members.
My friend, Nadzirah who lives in Indiana with her family, returned to Malaysia last Sunday. She makes this trip home to Malaysia every two years so she can celebrate the occasion with her mother, siblings and other relatives.
In Malaysia Aidil Fitri is celebrated with prayers at the mosques first thing in the morning, prayers with family at their homes, and the best part, with an open house. Relatives and friends will visit these open houses and delicious Malay delicacies like beef rendang, satay, ketupat and all kinds of cakes and cookies are served.
During this special occasion there are lots of special entertainment programs on TV. I am happy and pleased that Radio Television Malaysia has a livestream on the internet. I just hope that Malaysians living overseas will not clog RTM's bandwidth resulting in none of us being able to watch any of the TV programs on our computers!
Selamat Hari Raya to my Malaysian Muslim friends. Stay safe this festive season.
